Valentine's Day is named after Saint Valentinus of Rome, the patron saint of lovers. He lived in the 3rd century and married according to the Christian ritual, although the emperor had forbidden this act. According to tradition, the marriages of these couples seemed to have been entered into on favorable terms. Valentinus is said to have given the couple flowers from his garden.
